Flying, Hopping Pit-Bots for Cave and Lava Tube Exploration on the Moon and Mars

چکیده
1. Introduction: Wheeled ground robots are limited from exploring extreme environments such as caves, lava tubes and skylights. Small robots that utilize un-conventional mobility through hopping, flying and rolling can overcome many roughness limitations and thus extend exploration sites of interest on Moon and Mars. In this paper we introduce a network of 3 kg, 0.30 m diameter ball robots (pit-bots) that can fly, hop and roll using an onboard miniature propulsion system (Fig. 1). These pit-bots can be deployed from a lander or large rover. Each robot is equipped with a smartphone sized computer, stereo camera and laser rangefinder to perform navigation and mapping. The ball robot can carry a payload of 1 kg or perform sample return. Our studies show a range of 5 km and 0.7 hours flight time on the Moon.

Path Planning and Navigation Inside Off-World Lava Tubes and Caves
Detailed surface images of the Moon and Mars reveal hundreds of cave-like openings. These cave-like openings are theorized to be remnants of lava-tubes and their interior maybe in pristine conditions. These locations may have well preserved geological records of the Moon and Mars, including evidence of past water flow and habitability. Exploration of these caves using wheeled rovers remains a d...
متن کاملKILAUEA PIT CRATERS AS MARS ANALOGS: A New Direction for Cave-detection
Introduction: Detecting most of the caves that are likely to exist on Mars is difficult because their entrances must face skyward and be wide enough (>100 m) to be confirmed by THEMIS thermal-infrared observations [1]. Here we discuss the possibility of using THEMIS data to indirectly detect cave entrances that may exist in a small number of anomalous Martian pit craters. First identified in Ki...
متن کاملHuman utilization of subsurface extraterrestrial environments.
Caves have been used in the ancient past as shelter or habitat by many organisms (including humans). Since antiquity, humans have explored caves for the minerals they contain and sometimes for ceremonial purposes. Over the past century, caves have become the target of increasing exploration, scientific research, and recreation. The use of caves on extraterrestrial bodies for human habitation ha...
متن کاملGNC of the SphereX Robot for Extreme Environment Exploration on Mars
Wheeled ground robots are limited from exploring extreme environments such as caves, lava tubes and skylights. Small robots that can utilize unconventional mobility through hopping, flying or rolling can overcome these limitations. Multiple robots operating as a team offer significant benefits over a single large robot, as they are not prone to single-point failure, enable distributed command a...
متن کاملDistribution, Morphology and Structural Associations of Martian Pit Crater
Introduction: Pit craters are circular to elliptical collapse features that commonly occur in alignments (chains) and that coalesce into troughs [1], [2], [3], [4], [5]. We have begun systematically mapping the regional distribution of pit chains in the western hemisphere of Mars using the Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) data. Pit chains are most prominent in the Alba Patera region and along the Vall...
